My JavaScript loving boyfriend and I take a walk every morning and discuss everything from future dog names to the latest tech start up on Townsend St. This week he asked me if I had heard the ancient web term “handle” and was surprised that I still knew what it was. Back in the day (before twitter, facebook and even myspace) people had Internet alias’s called Handles. It was a way of communicating on the world wide web while still remaining anonymous. Mine used to be TurvyGRLBLUE. Haha That was my second email and AOL screen name. It all feels so archaic now, but my question is, would we still have them if not for Facebook. I remember when I joined Facebook in 2006 and was shocked that people out there would know my real and true name. My goodness what a scary thought. Then they could like look me up in the phone book or something or send me some antharax via US Mail. Then I realized that I wasn’t listed in the phone book and actually only had a cell phone. A cell phone smaller than Derick Zoolander‘s I might add. If we really did have Internet alias’s would it be easier to keep our personal lives separate? What are the benefits to having your real name online. Food for thought.

I do believe we shared our very first AOL screen name, wasn’t is something like mmgirl? or mrgirl? do you remember?
